..you’ve all been brilliant to work with, super professional and flexible, and put everyone appearing on camera at ease.

The Brief: Our task was to create a video that brought the Lives and Literacy in Ancient Egypt exhibition to life for an international audience, commissioned by the John Rylands Library through The University of Manchester Library. Through a combination of expert interviews and carefully shot object-led visuals, we told the story of the Library’s remarkable papyri collection, the ongoing conservation work behind it, and the wider academic and cultural value of sharing these materials with new audiences in North America.

The film was designed to explore the collection’s past, present and future, showing not only what these fragile objects can reveal about life and literacy in ancient Egypt, but also what this partnership represents for future research, public engagement and the exhibition itself.

We approached the visual style with a strong emphasis on symmetry, structure and restraint, using the architecture of the John Rylands Library to shape the film’s overall look. By framing many of the interviews centrally and allowing the arches, columns and long sightlines to guide the eye, we were able to give the film a sense of authority that matched both the subject matter and the setting. This approach also helped the contributors feel rooted in the space, so the location became part of the storytelling rather than simply a backdrop.

We also wanted the contrast between location and object to do some of the narrative work. The warm, carefully lit library interiors gave the film a sense of history and atmosphere, while the close-up papyri shots brought in texture, fragility and detail. That balance was important to us, because it reflected the brief: presenting the collection as both culturally significant and physically delicate. Where the film moves into conservation spaces, the cooler and cleaner look helps mark the present-day care of the objects, while still keeping the overall visual language consistent. Together, these choices allowed us to create a film that felt considered, accessible and closely aligned with the exhibition and its wider story.
